close-up of custom nasal mask

My custom nasal mask has a fiberglass shell holding a silicone insert that is molded to the contour of my face. The insert was made pouring liquid latex rubber on my face, allowing it to solidify, then using the resulting impression of my face to cast the insert from a silicone material.

My doctor says improvements in commerically made masks have made custom masks unnnecessary for the most part.

Another photo of the mask, showing how the two nasal tubes merge at an adapter, allowing a single hose to go to the BiPAP ventilator. Since 1986, I have worn out one head strap and one set of the short tubes that connect the mask to the adapter.

Here's me wearing the mask, ready for a restful night's sleep. This mask was made in 1988, and it is still working as well as it did when it was new. It shows no appreciable signs of wear. It's ugly, but it works perfectly.
